Cold Chain Starts with a Well-Maintained Body
A refrigerated truck body is one of the most demanding pieces of equipment in cold chain logistics. A failed seal or compromised insulation doesn’t just affect product quality — it can result in an entire load rejection, compliance breaches, and significant financial loss. These six monthly checks take less than an hour but can save your business thousands.
1. Inspect Door Seals and Gaskets
Refrigerated body door seals are your first line of defence against temperature loss. Run your hand around the full perimeter of closed doors — any gap or cold air escaping means a seal failure. Look for cracking, splitting, or compressed sections that no longer spring back. Replacement seals are inexpensive; temperature excursions from a failed seal are not.
2. Check the Floor for Delamination or Water Ingress
Refrigerated body floors — typically aluminium T-bar or fibreglass composite — can delaminate when moisture penetrates edge joints or damaged sections. Press down on the floor surface throughout the load area and listen for hollow sounds. Any soft or spongy sections indicate insulation compromise that will worsen with every refrigeration cycle.
3. Test Door Hinges and Locking Hardware
Rear barn doors on refrigerated bodies take thousands of open-close cycles per year. Check hinge pins for wear and play, and ensure lock rods operate smoothly. A door that doesn’t close flush creates a seal gap and also poses a safety risk at the loading dock.
4. Inspect the Body-to-Chassis Mounting
Vibration from road use can work loose the bolts and anti-vibration mounts that secure the refrigerated body to the chassis. A loose body can crack at stress points over time, leading to panel delamination and insulation damage. Check all mounting points torque on your monthly inspection.
5. Clean and Inspect Interior Panel Joins
Interior panel joins should be sealed and intact. Gaps allow moisture to penetrate the insulation core. Wash the interior thoroughly after every use, and inspect joins for any opening or sealant shrinkage. Re-sealing a join takes minutes; replacing a delaminated wall panel takes days.
6. Check Drain Plugs and Drainage
Floor drains must remain clear and drain plugs must seal correctly. A blocked drain causes water pooling that accelerates floor damage. Open drain plugs after each wash and confirm drainage is free before replacing them for the next run.
